As the spring semester begins, the FUSA Programming Board is working hard to introduce new events and plan activities that are student favorites.

Many old favorites will be returning this semester, such as free bowling at Nutmeg Lanes and the Broadway series trips to New York. The Broadway series will include “The Producers,” “Mamma Mia,” “Hairspray” and “Spamalot.”

But some new events are also in the planning stages.

According to FUSA President Jess DiBuono ’06, the Programming Board is planning a trip to the Rangers vs. Bruins hockey game at Madison Square Garden on March 20.

In early February, a group of Buddhist Monks from the “Mystic Arts of Tibet” will be coming to Fairfield as a part of a cultural program, according to Programming Board Member and Director of Music Mike Mancini ’07.

Mancini explained that the Buddhist Monks will interact with the students in order to get to know the University.

They then will create an image in sand that represents Fairfield on the ground floor of the Campus Center.

FUSA is also bringing back some past events because of student suggestions. “We’ve heard an overwhelming response from students asking us to bring back ‘Build-a-Bear,’ [an event in which students choose, stuff, and dress their own teddy bear]” DiBuono said, “so we’re doing our best to schedule that.”

Any new ideas or variations on past events come entirely from student input. “That includes FUSA members, but also the general student body population that has approached us with their ideas,” DiBuono said.

One of these ideas was to have another “Real World” lecture. On March 23, Danny and Melinda from MTV’s “The Real World-Austin” will be speaking at the Quick Center.

“Students ask for it every year,” said Mancini.

Bethany Kennedy ’07 is looking forward to seeing Danny and Melinda in March.

“I am so excited that FUSA is having another ‘Real World’ lecture,” she said. “I love to find out what really happened on the show.”

DiBuono is looking forward to seeing students attend these events.

“They’re planned for the students, by the students…I would love to see students coming out and having a good time at all the events,” she said.

As a senior, DiBuono realizes that this semester is full of “lasts” for her.

“I encourage all students not to miss out on the opportunities that Fairfield offers,” she said.

Diane Fields ’07 is already planning to take advantage of these opportunities.

“I’m planning on going to some of the Broadway shows this semester,” she said. “When else in my life will I be able to get $25 tickets to a Broadway show?”
