The Mirror staff was honored on May 24 at the annual Connecticut Society of Professional Journalists (CSPJ) awards dinner when six of its members received awards of excellence for their work in the journalism field.

CSPJ, established in 1904, is one of the most broad-based and well respected journalism organizations in the nation.

Last semester was the first time The Mirror staff submitted entries to the CSPJ competition.

The Mirror took home a total of 10 college-level awards, placed in all six award categories that covered divisions from editorial writing to sports photography and took first place in four of those categories.

Award winners from The Mirror include Fairfield alum and former Mirror editor in chief Ben Doody ’07, who placed first in the Editorial Column and Sports Story categories for his articles “The End of an Era” and “Retooling: Tim O’Toole Not To Return.”

Doody also took second place in the General Column category for his article, “All the Quips and Quirks from the Debate at the Quick Center.”

Fellow award winner and current news editor Ali Bart ’08 placed second in the Feature category for “Tale of a Little-Known Champ Gets Praise, Could Get Prize,” and received an honorable mention for her article, “Front and Center.”

Other award winners representing The Mirror were first place winner Dan Scivoletti ’07 in the General Column category for “Genie Dan Brings You: Your Horoscope for October,” and first place winner Jon Oliwerther ’10 for his sports photo “Play Brawl.”

Chris Simmons ’10 placed second in the Editorial Column category for “A New Standard,” and Tom Cleary ’10 placed second for his sports photo “Men’s Basketball Riding Seven Game.”

Cleary and Simmons also took second place in the General Reporting category for their article, “Where to From Here.”

English Professor James Simon, faculty advisor to the newspaper since 1997 said, “The Mirror has always had a good reputation in college journalism circles, and now it has some awards to show for all that hard work by students.”

Ben Doody ’07

Doody was awarded first place in the Editorial Column and Sports Story categories with “The End of an Era” and “Retooling: Tim O’Toole Not To Return.” Hewas also awarded second place in the General Column category with “All the Quips and Quirks from the Debate at the Quick Center.”

Dan Scivoletti ’07

Scivoletti was awarded first place in the General Column category for “Genie Dan Brings You: Your Horoscope for October.”

Ali Bart ’08

Bart was awarded second in the Feature category for “Tale of a Little-Known Champ Gets Praise, Could Get Prize,” and received an honorable mention for her article, “Front and Center.”

Jon Oliwerther ’10

Oliwerther was awarded first place for his sports photo “Play Brawl.”

Chris Simmons ’10

Simmons was awarded second place in the Editorial Column category with “A New Standard,” and second place in the General Reporting category with “Where to From Here.”

Tom Cleary ’10

Cleary was awarded second place for his sports photo “Men’s Basketball Riding a Seven Game,” and second place in the General Reporting category with “Where to From Here.”
