The Easter egg has become a ubiquitous symbol of the holiday, despite the obvious problem that rabbits don’t lay eggs. Clearly, the Easter Bunny is an egg-stealing bad-ass. Either way, the egg has been a popular Easter symbol for centuries.

Want to color your own eggs? Here are some easy-to-follow instructions.

Before dyeing the eggs, they need to be hardboiled – an easy task to do at home or in dorm kitchens that takes nine minutes.

Try decorating your eggs with crayons before dyeing them, which will repel the dye. You can also drip melted wax on the eggs, which will serve the same purpose but can be scraped off after dyeing for more fun designs. Or, simply use rubber bands to create designs.

Make your own dye with 1/2-1 tablespoon of any food coloring, mixed with 2 tablespoons of white vinegar in a cup filled halfway with water.

To make your eggs’ color marbled, just add 1 tbsp of oil to the mixture. Before dropping the egg in, stir it up quickly.

Egg dyeing can be a messy operation, but have fun with it!
