Fairfield head football coach Joe Bernard faces a driving under the influence and a careless driving charge in his hometown of Penn Argyl, PA. for an incident that occurred in late November.

Director of Athletics Eugene Doris has said that the incident is a “personal matter.” However, as a coach at a Division I university, or at any school or level for that matter, you have to be able to own up to your actions–often making your private life a publicized issue.

Bernard, himself, has made his personal life a public spectacle by drinking on the team bus on the way home from away games, according to a former member of the team.

Drinking on the team bus? That’s inconceivable. Doris has said that appropriate action was immediately taken against Bernard for his drinking and driving incident. But what about the times he hasn’t been the one driving, is that just going by the wayside?

Bernard is in his first year as head coach of the Stags, after serving as the team’s defensive coordinator the last five seasons. However, unconfirmed rumors that have circulated along with an anonymous letter The Mirror received, state that Bernard will not return for a seventh season with the program and will be dismissed after the recruitment period.
