In “Man of the Year.” Robin Williams plays Tom Dobbs, a late night talk show host who decides to run for, and wins, the position of President of the United States.

This begs the question: what would America be like with a comedian as the Commander in Chief.

Now, calm down folks. While wrestlers and bad actors may win elections, I doubt any comedians will triumph anytime soon. Well, maybe if Jon Stewart actually ran versus Kinky Friedman’s stuttering campaign in Texas, but he already said those “Stewart for ’08” shirts were false.

Watching “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart the other night, I started to wonder if maybe a comedian as a President wouldn’t be so bad.

Recently, John Kerry tried to insinuate that if you don’t go to college, you’d end up like President Bush bungling a war in Iraq. However, he actually made it seem as if our soldiers were uneducated, not the president.

With all the unnecessary publicity over Kerry’s botched joke, maybe politicians take themselves a little too seriously. Even worse, when they try to be funny, they come off as devoid of any sense of humor.

Even if played right, Kerry’s comment would have been less a joke and more a biting comment; I definitely wouldn’t have laughed. When Vice President Dick Cheney had his unfortunate hunting incident and shot his friend in the face, he tried to make light of the situation and came off at best fake, and at worst callous and inhuman.

A talented comedian could have made everyone forget his mishap by replacing people’s criticism with gut wrenching laughter.

With the bombardment of campaign ads this election season, I wouldn’t mind one just attempting to get in office.

Instead of politicians exploiting their own children, babies and senior citizens in attack ads, a comedian might actually make an ad which people wanted to watch.

When politicians try to make amusing commercials, the results are never funny and always cheesy.

A recent attack ad featured a very poor actor inviting a candidate to do drugs, implying the candidate’s supposed stance on drugs. In my opinion, this was the worst ad all election season.

If politicians had any knack for comedy, this could have actually been hilarious. It still would have been unnecessary and mean, but hilarious nonetheless.

Maybe we don’t need a comedian in the White House. We essentially have one in George W. Bush. Everything that comes out of that man’s mouth is comical.
