Cheers and Boos

CHEERS to the high turnout for Homecoming this past weekend. Attendance doubled since last year, and a great number of returning students were from classes that gratuated in the past few years. We hope that this will set a new standard for Alumni weekend. In addition to the recent grads, many older alumni brought their children to campus for the day. That alumni return and want to bring their families can mean only good things for the Fairfield community, and we hope the higher turnout will be a continuing trend.

BOOS to the lack of non-sports-related events that took place over alumni weekend. While we all enjoy watching a game or grabbing a beer with alumni of recent classes at the Grape, we cannot help but notice that there were few alternative events offered on campus for those who returned. The planners of the weekend need to create better events that will draw more alumni – and student – interest.

CHEERS to the Dolan School of Business being named, for the first time ever, to The Princeton Review’s “Best 237 Business Schools” for the 2006 academic year. This acknowledgement, based on student satisfaction surveys, included praises of the school’s “accessible and helpful faculty,” “fine finance program,” and “facilities equipped to accomodate up-to-date teaching technologies.” The school’s ranking is strengthened by its proximity to New York City and the headquarters of nearly 50 Fortune 500 companies.

BOOS to the Fairfield administration for cancelling 200 Nights. With the decree, the student body can add another item to the list of extinct traditions of Fairfield University. It is our hope that students will ressurect the tradition by planning the storied cruise privately, however, without administrative backing (and the security that comes with it), the event may become the booze-fueled liability that administrators are fearful of.
