To the Editor:

I was recently asked to describe volunteer activity here on campus and I was surprised by how extensive the activity is. With the caveat that I’m sure I don’t know every volunteer activity on campus, still I was able to cite just about any segment of our university community and its contribution to helping others – a sign that our Jesuit Mission of being “men and women for others” is alive and thriving here at Fairfield.

To underscore this, let me tell you of something that happened just last week.

Frank Szivos from the St. Vincent’s Medical Center Swim Across the Sound Foundation called to tell me that its singers for a Cancer Survivors Breakfast had just backed out. The breakfast was only a few days away. Did I think anyone at Fairfield could help them out?

A quick call to Dr. Carole Ann Maxwell, director of the Glee Club, gave me a group of students’ names to call. John Gallagher ’06 graciously accepted the challenge.

On Friday morning at the 7:30 a.m. breakfast at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport, thanks to John, and with “a little help from his friends,” 10 Glee Club members performed before over 400 guests at the Cancer Survivors Breakfast.

The members of the Men’s Ensemble who performed were: John Gallagher, Alex Claydon, AJ Piper, Dwight Tejano, Andrew Borello, Tony DaCosta, Joe Duffy, Luke Kloza, Colin Milne and Michael Verusio.

Congratulations to them and to all our students who respond so graciously and generously to the call to share their time and talents with those in need.

Sincerely,

Nancy Habetz
