Thank you from the class of 2010 for honoring students who will ‘always be remembered’

On behalf of the Class of 2010, we would like to thank you for honoring the lives of our classmates Maureen McAvoy and Kristen Duhamel in recent issues.

The tributes either in the newspapers or online editions informed all students of how special these two individuals were and why they will never be forgotten by those who knew them.

The 2010 Class Council, along with members of the Fairfield administration, have been working to memorialize both Maureen and Kristen here on campus.

It has been decided that there will be a plaque placed in the sanctuary of the Egan Chapel displaying the names of both Maureen and Kristen along with other students who have passed away over the past few years.

This will ensure that Kristen and Maureen will always be remembered here at Fairfield.

We will certainly all keep a special place in our hearts for Maureen and Kristen.

These two students certainly convey the message, “It is not the years in your life, but the life in your years.”

Thank you again,

The 2010 Class Council:

Class President Jeffrey Seiser, Vice President Jordan Hummel and Treasurer Caitlin Chipman

Stag volleyball: Where is the love?

To the Editor:

Last Saturday, I was one of the 156 fans in Alumni Hall who saw Stag volleyball defeat Siena 3-2 to move into first place in the MAAC.

There have been very few more exciting games in the history of the program, but where was the student support on Saturday for the most important home game of the regular season?

This season, Stag volleyball has been at the top of the MAAC standings but has been at the very bottom in attendance.

Your team often plays before more fans on the road than they do at home and that should be unacceptable to everyone.

The few students who did attend on Saturday afternoon saw an exciting game between the two top programs in the MAAC.

Hutch Williams led a small group of the Stags in the Stands, an animated trash talking Meka Werts [’08] led the entire women’s basketball team and the Pep Band helped to cheer on its fellow students. But where were the rest of the students on this rainy Saturday?

Stag volleyball is one of the most successful programs in the history of Fairfield University athletics. Your team has been in 10 of the 17 MAAC Volleyball Championship Final games and has won 5 in a row.

This is not “just” girl’s volleyball, high school PE volleyball or summer camp volleyball. This is NCAA Division I volleyball that is played on a level of athleticism, speed and intensity that needs to be experienced firsthand.

I wonder how many Fairfield students have never even been to one game in Alumni Hall this year or any year? This Sunday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall, five seniors will be honored for their four years of playing Stag volleyball.

Three of these players came from Hawaii and two came from California just to play a game they love and to represent Fairfield University.

They didn’t get to play before their families over the last four years, but on Sunday you will have the opportunity to show support for your fellow students by getting over to Alumni Hall and cheering them on.

They have come thousands of miles to Fairfield, Connecticut; are you too busy to come to Alumni Hall on Sunday for them and the rest of the team?

Sincerely,

Tom Leahy ’73
