To the Editor:

As season ticket holders for Fairfield basketball, and loyal supporters of Fairfield University and all Stag sports, we were appalled by the actions following half-time of the men’s basketball game against Manhattan on Friday night. After a large number of student athletes were recognized for their academic achievements, many of these same students left the arena immediately and failed to return to support the team. We believe that the lack of support for their fellow athletes is disheartening and is another example of student apathy on campus. Are the actions of the Fairfield University students a reflection of the institution we choose to be? We believe that athletics, academics and student life are important contributors to the academic success of an institution. Therefore, students must unite to form the “Red Sea.” The effort by the Stags in the Stands to draw students to athletic events is a step in the right direction. However, the Fairfield administration must also grasp this concept and learn from history that athletic success directly affects the school’s reputation, student pride and at the same time helps to reconnect with alumni. To all the students that left… everyone noticed. To all the students that stayed… thank you.

Sincerely, Thomas Catino ’08 Anthony Catino ’04
