To the Editor:

I am a member of the Class of 2004. At least, that’s what my student ID says. That same ID shows my birth date as 12/6/82. That’s right, I am a senior here and I am still 20 years old.

Never did the fact that my birthday happens to be late in the year bother me quite so much as it has this semester. Finally a senior, I expected to participate in all the things that are supposed to make senior year great.

On Senior Mug Night and the next “Pub Night,” I did not go because I saw signs which led me to believe that it was only for those 21 and over. Of course this upset me, but I told all my friends to have a good time without me and I stayed behind. Finally, “201 Nights” came around and flyers were put on my apartment door and in my mailbox asking me to come celebrate with the “entire” senior class.

Based on the fact that the word entire was in capital letters and the only mention of age was in an e-mail which said drink specials were for those 21 and over, I decided to go.

My friends and I braved the horrendous winds Thursday night to get to the Levee only to be told at the door that (#1) two forms of ID were required (which was not mentioned in any flyer or e-mail and according to my friends, was never done previously at a pub night) and (#2) you must be 21 to even be inside.

Half of my friends only had their student ID and I apparently was not welcome at all. Why was this never advertised?

Why were wristbands being given out if everyone inside had to be 21? Why are the coordinators of these events being so inconsiderate of the feelings of younger seniors?

I could not possibly be the only senior who is still 20, and even if I am, why should I be excluded from events specifically created for seniors? I have no control over when I was born. I don’t even drink. On any given night, I could go to the Levee, hang out with my friends, and not drink.

Why should Senior Pub Night be any different? Why do all of the senior events revolve around drinking anyway? Even 200 Nights was a “booze cruise.” All I want is a little consideration.

Sincerely,

Cathy Auriana ’04
