To the Editor:

As a school, Fairfield has become known for the number of students who have gone on to attend law school. As president of the debate team, I have to wonder why more of the people who are apply for law school have not joined the team. Not only will debate increase your persuasion skills, but you will be able to see if trail law is something you have an aptitude for.

Furthermore, having the ability to talk about nothing is a highly commendable skill, especially for a college student. Being a part of the debate team, I have gained the ability to talk about anything for at least eight minutes. I have talked about such topics as Designer Identity theory, Canadian health systems, the WHO and the bird flu at times when I know absolutely nothing about the topics. In fact, I have developed such faith in my ability to talk about nothing, I sometimes find myself drifting off during debates trusting that I will be able to fill my eight minutes of speech time with no problems. This skill has come in handy many times over the last three years.

I would like to invite the students of Fairfield University to develop these skills as well. If nothing else it will be a good ability to have when the teacher calls on you during class when you’re sleeping. Anyone with any questions about the debate team can reach me at 06_jfarrell2@stagweb.fairfield.edu.

Sincerely,

Jamie A. Farrell

Debate Team President
