To the Editor:

By the time this week’s edition of The Mirror is printed the votes will have been tallied for a new FUSA president. I am taking more interest in the candidates and their issues this year. I have closely examined the candidate’s platforms and have also been conscious of the feelings of my fellow students. It is because I am paying closer attention to the election that I realized something misleading about the editorial last week.

Several weeks ago I overheard that The Mirror would be supporting Vin Farisello for FUSA president. I remember thinking that was interesting considering the fact that the deadline to submit an application to run had yet to expire. I know for a fact that one candidate submitted their name on the day of the deadline. With this in mind I decided to wait and see whom The Mirror would support. I was hoping that it wouldn’t be someone that they decided to support even before all other options were revealed. I was wrong. Perhaps what I heard was a rumor, however, I find it to be more than a mere coincidence that the candidate you chose to support was the one whose name I heard previously.

At first, I found that the editorial appeared to be quite fair. After a second reading, I found the article to be quite misleading. Both candidates are extremely qualified and have good backgrounds with FUSA. The Mirror still chose to support Vin. Though the article appeared to be fair it was obvious that Karen Donoghue has equal, if not better credentials than Vin Farisello. The editorial failed to give the reader any idea about either candidate’s platforms. There was nothing negative written about Donoghue because there is nothing negative to be said about her and her campaign.

Apparently Vin’s campaign is not “broad political rhetoric.” What are his “short and sweet” specifics? Outside of the incoherent run-on sentence outlining his platform, nothing was made quite clear about what his ideas are.

Staying on that note and going beyond the Donoghue/Farisello FUSA election I feel that because The Mirror is the major source of information to students it should remain objective. In order to provide the best service for the Fairfield community The Mirror should offer non-biased perspectives and let the student’s begin to formulate their own opinions. Both Donoghue and Farisello are qualified candidates – you should have left it at that.

Sincerely,

Erin E. Gleason ’03
