Tuesday night, the Connecticut Post reported that Fairfield has hired Joe Frager, the Southern Connecticut State women’s basketball coach.

While the official announcement was not scheduled to be made until Wednesday at 11 a.m. (after the paper goes to print), the Post cites a “source close to the situation,” who revealed the news to them.

Of course, the last time the Post relied on an unnamed source, it claimed that UConn assistant coach Jamelle Elliot was offered the job and that she turned it down. Now its source says that the situation “might have been exaggerated.”

That really makes me want to trust its source now.

I’m not saying that Frager is a bad choice. In fact, I hope they did hire him. He has been a success everywhere he has coached and has Connecticut high school ties, a major plus in recruiting.

This season, he finished with a 34-2 record and won the NCAA Division II championship. In his nine seasons with Southern Connecticut, Frager has posted a 189-83 record. Before his tenure there, he went an equally impressive 208-58 in 11 seasons at Seymour High, winning three state titles.

His style of play should fit well with the Stags. His teams are generally very tough on defense and Southern routinely held teams to less than 50 points per game.

It won’t be too much of a stretch for Fairfield to play the same way. They return a core group of players, all of whom learned to play tough defense under former head coach Dianne Nolan.

Yet, this is all speculation. University officials would not confirm whether or not Frager had been hired.

Apparently the Post has some special privileges that we common student papers don’t have. The “great” Connecticut Post, which, as a real newspaper, must have more credibility than a bunch of college students. They aren’t allowed to curse, unlike us. Too bad, maybe if they loosened up a bit they might actually attract a few more readers.

Frager would be a good fit for Fairfield as a young coach who has a ton of potential.

Hopefully he gets the chance the Post claims he will.
