Following a 1-0 loss at Princeton on Tuesday night, the women’s soccer team will prepare for MAAC conference play.

The loss lowers Fairfield’s record to 7-2-2 and breaks their unbeaten streak at nine games. Overall, the Stags came into the game ranked second in the NSCAA Northeast Region poll and they also received seven votes in the NSCAA/adidas National Poll this week.

Both the Tigers and the Stags were unable to score until the 81st minute of the game, when Princeton found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

The Stags tried to rally, and had several opportunities at the end, including two corner kicks in the final 90 seconds, but they were unable to convert. The win gives the Tigers, ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic region poll, a 5-1-1 record.

Senior Ahna Johnson, despite playing with lingering leg injuries, leads the team with 16 points and was named one of 30 candidates for the 2008 Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

The award recognizes excellence in four C’s: the classroom, character, community and competition. The national media will select the 10 finalists in October and fan balloting along with votes from coaches and media will determine the winner.

‘This is a tremendous recognition of the all-around person that Ahna is and what she has meant to not only our program, but the University as a whole,’ said Head Coach Jim

O’Brien in a press release. ‘Ahna is the epitome of what a student-athlete is supposed to be and it has been a pleasure to watch her develop over these last four years.’

Freshman goalie Kelly Boudreau was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday following a shutout against Harvard. Boudreau ranks 30th in the nation with a save percentage of .81. She has also made 49 saves.

The Stags open their MAAC season at Rider on Friday and continue south to play at Loyola on Sunday.

Fairfield and Loyola tied at Fairfield during the regular season last year, but the Greyhounds knocked the Stags out of the MAAC Tournament in the semifinals.

Fairfield will play all nine MAAC opponents once during the season with the top four teams advancing to the MAAC playoffs for a shot at an NCAA Tournament berth.
