WEST WINDSOR, NJ – It was calm waters and smooth sailing for Fairfield’s novice 4+ as they captured first-place at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championships on Sunday April 24, 2006.

The team comprised of freshmen Jessica Braveman, Liz Ulles, Mary Crowley, Rosalind McGrail and coxswain Amanda Bennette, crossed the finish line at 8:16.7, a strong six seconds before runner-up Marist College. The win helped the Stags score 100 points and finish fourth overall.

The Stags novice 8 also had a stellar day finishing second in its event with a time of 7:30.0, coming in right after Loyola. The novice 4 group of McGrail, Crowley, Ulles and Braveman were joined by fellow freshmen Lindsay Ryan, Liz Reilly, Christina DiCioccio, Sam Rosen, and coxswain Bennette.

“We knew going into the competition that the school to beat was Loyola and we really should have won the race,” said Crowley. “We have been training really hard, but we are going to see Loyola again at Dad Vails in Philadelphia in two weeks, so we really hope to beat them once and for all.”

Strong performances were also seen by the varsity 4, Cecelia Oliverio ’07, Emily Green ’07, Kelly Reynolds ’07, Nancy Sidnam ’07, and coxswain Andrea Janson, who took fourth with a time of 8:17.7.

The junior varsity 4+ also turned in a stellar effort as Mallory Reimers ’08, Amanda Klecker ’08, Sara LaFauci ’08, Rebecca Bowes ’08, and coxswain Daria Anuszkiewicz finished with a time of 8:21.4, coming in behind Loyola and Marist.

“I thought we had a solid performance and worked together really well,” said Oliverio of the varsity four, fourth place race. “It was the best we’d rowed all season; we just really connected well this race.”

The Stags finished off the day with the varsity 8 made up of Sidnam, Rosen, Reilly, Reynolds, Green, Ryan, DiCioccio, Oliverio and coxswain Anuszkiewicz, who took fourth crossing the line at 7:47.96.

“Our season isn’t over yet,” said Crowley. “Our novice four has had a lot of success though…we have been pretty happy with the overall results.”

Fairfield competes next in the New York Metropolitan Championships at Pelham Bay on April 29. However do to two varsity team member injuries, only novice will be showcased during this regatta.
