Deng Gai wins USBL award: Former Fairfield forward Deng Gai ’05, played for the Albany Patroons, this past season and was named to the USBL All-Defensive Team. Gai helped lead the Patroons to a 16-7 record, the second-best record in the regular season. Gai finished the season first in blocks with 2.1 per game, blocking 23 shots in 11 games played. Gai also performed well on the offensive end, finishing fourth in the league with a 0.571 field goal percentage. Gai was a three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Year winner and led the nation in blocks as a senior in 2005. -Tom Cleary

Field hockey drops two against nationally ranked opponents: Fairfield has had a tough year so far this season and has a 2-11 record, but has played a very difficult schedule, including three nationally ranked teams. This past weekend the Stags faced two nationally ranked teams, No. 14 Boston University and No. 16 Albany. The Stags gave a solid effort against both teams, falling 4-1 to BU and 3-0 to Albany. Amy Hosking ’09 scored the Stags’ lone goal of the weekend, while goalkeeper Liz Thomas ’08 recorded a combined 21 saves to keep the Stags in both games. -Tom Cleary

Stags stagger to finish at New England Championships: The men’s and the women’s cross country teams traveled to Franklin Park in Boston where the temperature was over 90 degrees. The Stags finished 40th out of 43 men’s teams. The women’s side finished 42nd out of 44 teams. The women’s top finisher was Caroline Conant ’10, who finished 248th with a time of 22:00, an average of 7:04 a mile. The men’s top finisher was Ben Heslin ’11, who finished 194th with a time of 28:24, for an average mile time of 5:46. -Chris Simmons

Swimming and diving prepares for season: The women’s and men’s teams open the season on Oct. 12 against Holy Cross. Aside from dual meets, they will swim in the Harold Anderson Invitational, the MAAC Championships and the ECAC Championships to end the season. The men’s side is led by Drew Kingman ’09, who set 10 school records in his first semester with the team last year after transferring from Denison. The women are led by Liz Lawler ’08, who holds four individual records and is part of five relay records. -Chris Simmons

Male Athlete of the Week

ATHLETE: Matt Cleveland ’10 SPORT: Men’s soccer ACHIEVEMENT: Cleveland, a sophomore goalkeeper, played his second and third career games this weekend, filling in for the injured J.P. Francini ’08. He relieved Cleveland in the second half of the Stags game against Manhattan, earning his first win. Then on Sunday in his first start, he shut down one of the MAAC’s top offenses, St. Peter’s, recording seven saves in his first career shutout.

Female Athlete of the Week

ATHLETE: Nicole Cavallaro ’11 SPORT: Women’s soccer ACHIEVEMENT: Cavallaro became the first two-time winner of the Athlete of the Week Award after a notable performance this weekend. Cavallaro set a school record with four assists against Niagara, adding a goal in Fairfield’s 6-0 win. She also scored the game-winning goal and had an assist against Canisius in the Stags’ 2-1 win, earning her the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. She was named to the SoccerBuzz Elite Team of the Week.
