Playing with ‘Heart’: The Fairfield Women’s Rugby Club did not think they were making the playoffs.’ At the end of the season, they were 0-4, but the girls were still in 4th out of 6th place in the Met New York Club League.
The girls then were to play the leaders of the pre-playoff season in the playoffs; this year, that turned out to be no other than the undefeated Sacred Heart.
The last time Fairfield had played Sacred Heart, they lost 46-0. However, on Sunday in the playoff game, Fairfield gave Sacred Heart a challenge, going into 20 minutes of overtime and then into Sudden Death. Sacred Heart made the end score 17-12 with a final try.
‘After the game, the ref came up to us and told us that he’d never seen a team with so much heart,’ said Seana Mazzarino ’10.
‘The level of energy and dedication that the team put out was amazing,’ said Ashley Williams ’08. ‘Everyone really stepped it up and gave it their all. Overall I think we not only really impressed the crowd and the other team but ourselves as well.’

Men’s Golf

Might on the mount: The Fairfield men’s golf team finished third overall at the Mount St. Mary’s fall invitational tournament, which concluded this past Tuesday. The Stags impressive showing including a day-best score on the tournament’s final day.
Individually, junior standout Kevin Fitzpatrick and senior R.J. Zielinski again paced the Stags. Fitzpatrick finished with Fairfield’s best overall performance, finishing in a tie for ninth place. He finished with a cumulative score of 155.
His teammate Zielinski, though, finished with the most impressive effort of the weekend, as he totaled a score of 78 on the tournaments second day to move into 12th place overall.

Male Stag-lete of the Week

ATHLETE: Justin Burse ’08
SPORT: Men’s Soccer
ACHIEVEMENT: Despite a losing effort, Burse recorded a season-high ten saves, including eight in the second half, against Loyola, a team currently ranked seventh nationally.

Female Stag-lete of the Week

ATHLETE: Michelle Yoshida ’12
SPORT: Swimming
ACHIEVEMENT: Yoshida was named MAAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week for her performance in the season’s first week. Yoshida won four individual events and two relays.

Game of the Week

Men’s Soccer at Niagara
Friday, Oct. 31
Men’s soccer head coach Carl Rees acknowledged that the MAAC had drastically improved this season after the Stags fell to Loyola, 2-1, last Sunday at Lessing Field. The tough stretch continues this coming Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. against the Purple Eagles, who currently hold a 9-4-2 record and are tied for the third in the MAAC standings – one spot about Fairfield.
