Just one day is enough to change your life forever.

For Henry Perowne, a Saturday in February 2003 was that day.

Perowne has the perfect life that anyone could dream of. Married to a newspaper lawyer with two grown children; one is a blues guitarist and the other, a poet.

One Saturday night, two years after the 9/11 attack, Perowne awoke in the early hours before dawn to discover a plane on fire when he looked outside through his window.

The Londoner is fearful for the possibility that his city will be next on the list.

“In fact, the spectacle has the familiarity of a recurrent dream…Perowne regards this as a matter for wonder, a human complication beyond the reach of morals,” author Ian McEwan wrote.

Later to find out it was nothing more than just a little mechanical problem which caused an emergency landing.

As Perowne carries on with his day, he encounters a thug, Baxter, that tries to mug him. However, due to Baxter’s early onset of medical problems, Perowne escapes.

Through a series of unfortunate events, one comes to realize how powerful the human heart can be to overcome difficult obstacles to do the righteous thing in the end.

McEwan brings to us graphic medical stories that show the heart that lies within all of us.

“Saturday” teaches us to appreciate life day by day because you never know what might happen in the near future.
