Tired of staring at that extra can of tuna in your cupboard?

During the Thanksgiving season, students and faculty at Fairfield University have the opportunity to donate non-perishable food items to those less fortunate. From Nov. 11 through Nov. 25, Circle K is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive.

The food will be donated to the Thomas Merton House, a soup kitchen in Bridgeport. Fairfield University’s Circle K has set up drop boxes all over campus to make it easier for students and faculty to give to those less privileged.

“We would be very grateful if you could give some food that you have in your room that you’re not going to eat before Thanksgiving,” said Kathryn Turscany, ’05, chair of the food drive.

“The food doesn’t have to be related to Thanksgiving. If people want to drop off soup or crackers or chips, any food can help.”

This is the first year that Circle K is hosting the Thanksgiving food drive, but there are hopes to make it an annual event.

“I hope the food drive will set a precedent for future years,” said Marta Matselioukh, ’04, vice president of Circle K at Fairfield.

Matselioukh believes the food drive will benefit those who make a contribution, as well as those who will receive the donation.

“I’m going home for Thanksgiving and I know there is going to be a delicious meal waiting for me there, where in Bridgeport there are those less privileged,” said Matselioukh. “I think everybody who donated to this will have a much more delicious meal knowing that there’s someone else they were able to feed.”

Circle K, the world’s largest collegiate organization, is established with over 500 clubs worldwide. It was established at Fairfield University in 1982, and currently has 21 full-time members and some part time members.

If any students are interested in helping Circle K, their weekly meetings are in the Regis lounge at 6:30 p.m. on Monday nights.

“Anybody is welcome to come because our goal is to help serve as many people as possible,” said Matselioukh. “Even if you can only volunteer at one event, that would be a tremendous help.”
