Tonight, Mike Falzone plays at the Acoustic Café with invited guests Clementine Broadcast (formerly the Miles Standish Monument), Monitor and the Merrimac (2004 graduate Dave Grazynski and his banjo), Alex Claydon and Mike Davis. Falzone, who did the inviting, says it’s just like any other show on any other night. “To me this is just a show, this is what I do,” he said. “I bust my ass to play as much as possible and when I do it around here I get to bring some FU friends along to give them support.” Even though it is just another show and it is just another night, it’s an opportunity to get Fairfield students off campus to see their favorite on-campus musicians. In the past, the Dolan chapel/lounge and the Levee have hosted all these acts, most often on separate nights. Tonight they share the stage for about a half hour each. Falzone is best known for his lead vocals in JonnieProud, one of Fairfield’s most notorious bands in recent years. They have since gone their separate ways, and Falzone has been playing local and less-than-local gigs on his own with an acoustic guitar. With a recognizable vocal style and a large following, Falzone’s career in music may just be beginning. Solo acoustic guitarists Mike Davis and Alex Claydon each have their own different styles of playing. Claydon’s cover of “Let’s Get it On” (if he plays it) along with Davis’ humorous control of the crowd will both be impressive additions to the evening. Each write their own music and have been attracting a great deal of attention, completely independent of each other. Grazynski, HAM Broadcast Manager/Producer, is in the beginning stages of a possible folk career with Monitor and the Merrimac. He and his banjo have been appearing at local bars and clubs here and in New Haven. Some people may think the banjo is a gimmick, but Grazynski takes it seriously and treats it as an art. His approach to music and performing are very unique and definitely worthy of attention. Clementine Broadcast has been seen in a few different forms. Lou Jannetty, Bo Moore, Evan Barden and JP Francini started the Miles Standish Monument, which attracted a tight following here at Fairfield over the last year or so. Add Nick Shifrin to the bunch and you’ve got the appropriately named Clementine Broadcast. With a new demo CD and some new songs, this band of close friends is noticeably tighter than last year and continues to impress with each show. Bring $5 to the Acoustic Café in Bridgeport tonight at 9 p.m., and be ready to experience the best of what Fairfield University’s independent musicians have to offer.
