Hip hop music was just the thing to bring students together.

Last Thursday night hip hop music filled the lower level of the Barone Campus Center as students came together to learn a new style of dance. The Elevation of Hip Hop hosted the Harding High School Dance Team at Fairfield University.

There were three teams that won direct funding from the grant and, although Elevation of Hip Hop was not one of them, they did receive other funding to put on three events.

“While The Elevation of Hip Hop did not receive the actual grant funding, they have since received subsequent support and funding from this grant, as well as other divisions of the university,” said Ashley Toombs ’07 who was on the Advisory board that selected the grants recipients.

The team began by performing two dance routines for students to watch, followed by an instructional phase in which the students actually learned a variety of dance moves.

“They drew people in with their routines. Not only were you sitting their watching, but you got to participate,” said Erica Stankard ’08.

Regardless of age, race, or gender this event brought all students together to learn from one another.

“It was humbling to be taught by high school students. We think we know everything simply because we are older,” said Toombs.

As the third and final event held as part of Diversity Week, this night in particular reminded students that everyone has something to offer, and that it is possible to learn from those who are younger then us if we give them a chance.

One student felt that this type of interactive event was exactly what was needed to bring students together to have fun and learn about other cultures.

“They simply need to have more of this at Fairfield,” said Jeff Billingham ’09.
