Scandal. Sex. Swastikas. Not the typical words students have used to describe a Theatre Fairfield show.

However, all of the above themes are showcased in the first production of the year: the well-known musical “Cabaret.”

“Cabaret is about seduction, scandal and sex,” said Jodie Pfau ’07, Theatre Fairfield’s Public Relations coordinator and also a member of the cast. “If that doesn’t get college kids to see the show, I don’t know what else will.”

The play is set in Berlin, Germany, during the time leading up to World War II. The characters live in two different worlds. Some characters choose to forget their troubles and live in the fantasy world of the cabaret, while other characters face the fact that Hitler and the Nazis are rising to power.

“The further we get into rehearsals, the more we are learning about what life was like for the people in Berlin as World War II was approaching, the danger, the terror and the thrill of the times,” said Pfau.

Lindsey McKitterick ’09 agreed.

“The show not only provides the audience with great songs and amazing dance numbers, but also with an emotional and on-the-edge-of-your-seat thrill,” McKitterick said. “It lets you into the world of Berlin just before the Nazis took over.”

Although the show does provide the audience with historical information, it is not simply a history lesson.

According to McKitterick, there is something for everyone in the audience, including flashy dance numbers and girls in underwear onstage.

The play focuses around the irresistible Sally Bowles, played by Tess Brown ’07, who has thrown her life away to drugs and prostitution. Yet Bowles still manages to get up on stage every night to perform.

The cast also includes Jared Mezzocchi playing the role of the flamboyant and eccentric Emcee and Tim King ’08 playing the role of realist Cliff Bradshaw.

Performances will be held in the Wien Experimental Theatre at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Wednesday, Oct. 26 through Saturday, Oct. 29 at 8 p.m. Additional performances will take place on Saturday, Oct. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2 p.m.
