ON-CAMPUS

Born out of the New York City hardcore and D.C. punk scenes, Ted Leo has plenty of street credibility. His work with the Pharmacists, however, is a great departure from his loud rock roots.

The music of the Pharmacists is extremely catchy and sweet. Ted’s voice is strong, both recorded and live, and he has assembled a band of superb musicians. Songs such as, “Under the Hedge” off of the first full length, Tyranny of Distance, are touching and romantic, while songs such as, “Loyal to My Sorrowful Country,” are politically motivated.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacist’s brand of melodic, upbeat rock and roll is undeniably pleasing. Both full length albums are gems and would be recommended to anyone who likes rock and roll with a catchy hook and great lyrics.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists will be making Fairfield their first stop before they hit the road to tour. They will be playing the Levee on March 11. This show is free for students.

LOCAL CONCERTS

The Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport is best known on this campus for being the playing ground for the basketball team, but on March 17 it will become John Mayer’s turf.

Mayer, the musician made famous with the 2002 hit “No Such Thing,” grew up in Fairfield yet hasn’t returned to the area to perform since making it big. Riding on the success of his second multi-platnum album, “Heavier Things,” attendees can expect a set full of new electric tunes mixed with old radio favorites.

Opening for Mayer is Guster, a college favorite who has been touring on the college circuit for years, is performing there as well (rumor has it that if you stand close enough to them you might get a pair of socks). And sure, you’ve heard the rumors of Mayer drinking at the Grape. Since tickets are likely sold out by now, your best bet to see him is there. Either that, or he’ll be “running through the halls of [his] high school” (Fairfield High). Or…not.

MOVIES

Perhaps the most anticipated movie release of March is Todd Phillip’s (“Old School,” “Road Trip”) remake of the classic ’70s cop show “Starsky and Hutch.”

The movie features Ben Stiller as the uptight, devoted detective David Starsky and Owen Wilson as his partner, the laid-back Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson.

The film follows the adventures of the two detectives as they attemtp to track down Reese Friedson (Vince Vaughn), a polyester-clad businessman who has found a way to make cocaine undetectable by taste or smell.

The film promises to be a funnier version of the classic ABC cop show, complete with cameos from Will Ferrell, Juliette Lewis, Amy Smart and Carmen Electra. And definitely be sure not to miss Snoop Dogg’s appearance as the fly undercover informant Huggy Bear – he knows a lot about grass.

“Starsky and Hutch” opens nationwide on March 5.

MUSIC

March 23 marks the release of the newest album from The Vines, “Winning Days.” Over the past 18 months, the public has seen The Vines transform from a relatively unknown Sydney band into a mainstream rock ‘n’ roll mainstay, after hits such as “Get Free” from their debut album “Highly Evolved” skyrocketed up the charts.

“Winning Days” promises to be more of the same for the Aussie rockers, combining scratchy vocals, incessant guitar hooks, catchy beats and simple, rough lyrics. If the albums title is any indicator of the its sound, then it’s sure to be a hit.
