Twirling, spinning, launching and leaping dancers from the Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform on Saturday, October 2 in the Quick Center for the Arts as part of the weeklong celebration of the inauguration of President Jeffrey von Arx, S.J.

“We brought the Paul Taylor Dance Company in because he [Paul Taylor] is one of the greatest choreographers of the century, and one of the people that has shaped modern dance in this country,” said Deborah Sommers, the Quick Center’s director of programming. “This is his fiftieth anniversary tour, and I wanted us to be a part of that celebration of his work.”

As part of the event Paul Taylor will also be awarded with the Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J., Award for Excellence in the Arts by Fr. von Arx.

“We felt with the president’s inauguration time, it was great timing to revisit this award and combine the idea of excellence both for the arts in terms of Paul Taylor’s work and in terms of the future excellence that this university will continue to reach with the new president,” said Sommers.

The dance company has performed in 60 countries and over 450 cities, according to their website. Taylor has been recognized as “the best choreographer in the world” by the New York Daily News and has been called the “reigning master of modern dance” by Time Magazine.

The event is aimed at a wide audience, including the student community.

“The performance is targeted to everyone,” said Sommers. “The beauty of dance doesn’t escape the university community, and we have seen since the beginning of the Quick Center a solid support by many students that love dance too.”

Tickets are available through the Quick Center box office at 203-254-4010.
