Independently owned record stores across the nation will celebrate the first annual Record Store Day on April 19 by holding special events, including in-store performances, parties, appealing sales, and customer goodie bags.

According to Recordstoreday.com , music legends, such as Paul McCartney, are supporting the new holiday with fervor, saying record stores have always supported them and should be kept alive with appreciation.

The former Beatle gave his approval of the event, saying: “There’s nothing as glamorous to me as a record store. When I recently played Amoeba in LA, I realized what fantastic memories such a collection of music brings back when you see it all in one place. This is why I’m more than happy to support Record Store Day, and I hope that these kinds of stores will be there for us all for many years to come.”

The event was organized by the Alliance of Independent Media Stores , the Coalition of Independent Music Stores , the Music Monitor Network , Newbury Comics and the Value Music Group of Indie Stores, which collaborate to invite all record stores to participate in the new festivities.

Many musicians and music lovers say that record stores are unique homes for new music, and Record Store Day was created to remind people of their importance in the musical world.

“The indie record stores are the backbone of the recorded music culture. It’s where we go to network, browse around and find new songs to love,” said Joan Jett, member of the music group Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, according to the Web site.

Three record stores in Connecticut will be celebrating Record Store Day, the closest being Gerosa Records in Brookfield .
