Often referred to by themselves as “the greatest band in the world,” Tenacious D is a comedic rock duo that was formed in the late 1990s by musicians/actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The group first revealed themselves to the world in 1997 in their own HBO television series.

Although the concept of “The Pick of Destiny” had plenty of potential, it was a big flop in theatres. With almost three years of production put into both the film and record, it came as a shock to see that very little effort was put into the writing.

“Destiny” is the kind of movie that consisted of childish humor covered with unnecessary profanity.

“Destiny” did have an abundance of guest appearances. Some of these appearances included Ben Stiller, Amy Poller, Tim Robbins, Colin Hanks, Meatloaf, Ronnie James Dio and Foo Fighter’s front man Dave Grohl. While appearances by Ben Stiller and Tim Robbins made the movie more amusing, the other guests had no effect on the quality of the movie.

Directed by close friend Liam Lynch and produced by Ben Stiller, the film tells the story of Jack Black and Kyle Gass as aspiring musicians who come together to form the rock band Tenacious D. Struggling to become the world’s greatest band, the duo embark on a mission to steal a magical guitar pick, known as the pick of destiny, in hopes of transforming themselves into rock gods.

The band’s sophomore album shares the same name as the movie and was just as much of a letdown. Not only were the songs less catchy than the tracks on first album, but they were not very funny. The little humor that is present in the songs would only be understood if you have watched the film beforehand, and even then they aren’t that great.

The D released their self-titled debut album in 2001 which was compiled of songs based on their short-lived TV show. The album was seen as a huge success in both the comedy and music world, as it has sold almost one million copies to date. All the success and popularity the band has received led to the release of their second studio album and film, “Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny.”

I have always considered myself a fan of Tenacious D since their first release. I also have acknowledged Jack Black as an amazing musician, as well as one of the funniest actors around. Still, his latest work in “Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny” as both a musician and actor was not satisfying. The songs on the CD were all bland and repetitive, and the comedy in the movie was scarce.

When making your trip to the DVD aisle, I suggest you steer clear from Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny.
