Arguably the most influential band in the history of music, The Beatles held out their musical hand to a new demographic Monday night.

But these new fans are not your typical classic rockers; in fact, they aren’t even from Earth.

On Monday night, NASA beamed a Beatles song deep into space, 431 light years away, according to the NASA Web site.

And there is no better song to fit the mood than the ironically-titled song, “Across the Universe.” The NASA project will mark the 40th anniversary of the song’s release, as well as the 50th anniversary of NASA.

“Across the Universe” was sent through the Deep Space Network, an international network of antennas used in space exploration missions, at 7 p.m. Monday, the Web site said.

Fans all over the world were encouraged to take part in this unorthodox event by playing the track at the same time as the transmission.

“Across the Universe” was the first song to ever be broadcast directly into space, being the perfect song for space-aliens to rock out to all over the galaxy.

With the project, Feb. 4, 2008, will officially go down in history as “Across the Universe Day.”

The Beatles have undoubtedly left an enduring impact on the world. This new project may enable their music and message to reach those who are, literally, out of this world.
