The Mirror: How do you feel the race has been going so far? Ken Flatto: The election race is going quite well and we feel confident that our record of success and accomplishment is being recognized by voters.

TM: What issues do you feel have been important to you that would affect Fairfield University?

KF: I have worked very closely with Fairfield University and have been involved to create joint projects which are good for Fairfield and good for Fairfield U. A few examples include much closer collaboration between emergency services with the creation of reverse 911 calls to reach all students in the event of a real disaster or emergency situation, and working with faculty to provide more arts programs in Fairfield, from campus to the new theater on Sanford Street.

TM: How do you feel about beach residents and other off-campus students at Fairfield?

KF: We always strive to find a good balance between off-campus housing and relations with year-round residents. We want all students to have a good experience at Fairfield. It was my idea for the University to hire an off-campus coordinator, and I am the only first selectman ever to hold quarterly meetings with University officials, FUSA officers, off-campus SBRA student officers, and police and local residents. The goal has been to create cooperation.

TM: What would you want Fairfield students to know about your campaign?

KF: I hope all students recognize that I am the strongest environmentalist town leader in history, creating open space and clean energy programs, and that I have led the best and biggest improvements to town schools in decades. Two of my four children are now in college with one more a rising senior. I understand the hopes and needs of college-age adults.
