After a year of at the helm of The Mirror, the 27th editorial board has stepped down from contol of the newspaper, signaling the end of its year-long term. This was the first issue published by the 28th editorial board of Fairfield University’s student newspaper.

The Mirror’s new Editor in Chief is Sean Hayes ’03, who had served on the previous editorial board as managing editor.

The faculty adviser to The Mirror, Dr. James Simon of the English Department, said the graduating seniors made an outstanding choice in selecting Hayes for the top job.

“Sean brings an unusual combination of very good writing ability, great people skills, solid news judgment and proven leadership to the job.

Combine that with one of the most veteran staffs ever, and students have the right to have high expectations for The Mirror next year.”

Joining Hayes at the top of the newspaper’s new masthead is Managing Editor (Editorial) Ethan Fry ’04, a former Sports Editor and Managing Editor (Design/Online) Joshua O’Connell ’04, who had previously been The Mirror’s Graphic Arts Editor.

“I agree that students should expect a lot from The Mirror next year,” said Editor in Chief Emeritus Frank Washkuch. “Its combination of veteran leadership and solid work ethic is virtually unmatched by all recent Mirror staffs.”

Returning to the editorial board are News Editor Laura Walsh ’03 and Mike Pignataro ’03, both of whom were previously co-Online Editors, as well as Stephanie Sierzputowski, now in her second year as Campus Life editor. Commentary Editor Chris Zeitz ’04, Photography Editor Amy Womack ’03 and Copy Editor Cristina Bertuca ’03 are also continuing in their previous positions.

Serving on the editorial board for the first time is Arts and Entertainment Editor Gwen Nolan ’04, who was promoted from her former position of Assistant Arts and Entertainment editor.

Simon noted that he had never seen a staff with so many editors returning to the paper. He credited it to Fairfield students getting involved with The Mirror in their freshman and sophomore years and gaining experience that later helps them when interning at professional news organizations in their final years at the school.
