With the end of the final campus event of the year in May Day, the student body looks to the future of outdoor campus events. StagStock in fall 2001 was a big success, with over 2,500 people in attendance for the outdoor concert in the quad. Organizers hope that StagStock 2002 will be an even bigger success, but funding has become a problem.

“We didn’t get the usual end of the year funding from FACE (Financial Assistance for Creative Events) like we were hoping for,” said Sarah Courtney ’03, the coordinator of last year’s StagStock and the executive producer at the Ham Channel. “We’re interested in maybe having a club co-sponsor the event, or maybe get some corporate sponsorship.”

The bands will most likely be of a similar genre as last year when O.A.R. (Of A Revolution) played, according to Courtney.

“StagStock was a great way to kick off this past year,” said Karen Donoghue, the President of FUSA. “It brought so many people to the quad: people from off campus, upperclassmen, and underclassmen.”

“We’re still hoping for an all-day event, but we may have to end it earlier because of the local residents,” Courtney said.

“Unfortunately, the town won a case against the school which really prohibits programming into the night,” said Donoghue. “Our best option is to try and work something out (with the town).”

Donoghue suggested moving the event to a more central location away from the residents or talking to the police about other options to make StagStock 2002 more enjoyable.

“Hopefully, more organizations will be able to get involved to have a whole day’s worth of fun,” Donoghue said.

“We’re also interested in have a barbecue at StagStock next year,” Courtney said. “Last year, we tried to have Sodexho cater some kind of barbecue, but they had to fulfill commitments to the school in order to make sure dinner was prepared for everyone.”

According to Courtney, there were a few injuries last year. The StagStock staff hopes to have more security and invest in other safety devices.

Compared to last year’s event, StagStock 2000 had a more disappointing turn. Coordinators hope that the momentum of last years StagStock will make StagStock 2002 even more successful.
