To the Editor:

As a Fairfield University student and part-time Sodexho employee, I was disgusted to read Ms. Sheehan’s article about the Sodexho employees who were fired and reinstated after allegedly urinating in a storage room. I was extremely disturbed that the staff of The Mirror apparently did not feel the need to check their facts before writing such an incendiary story.

First, the two employees were fired for allegedly urinating. The union employees who watched the security camera footage were not able to discern if the male employees were actually urinating, or simply “adjusting” themselves.

Second, the photo taken by Ms. McCarthy is of a store room in the kitchen, and the incident occurred in the loading dock, by the dumpsters and nowhere near food. I also found the cartoon on page A9 to be similarly repugnant. If students want to complain about the taste of the food, or the options (or lack thereof) in Barone and in the Stag, they are certainly welcome to, as free speech is our birthright.

If the allegations had been proven true, I stand in agreement with students and fellow employees that the pair should have been fired. That is unsanitary, and even though employees who handle food are required to wear latex gloves at all times, the thought of unwashed hands evokes a rather disturbing mental picture.

Through the course of my first year, I have come to rely on The Mirror as an excellent source of local on and off campus news and a very enjoyable read. But to publish an article filled with anonymous sources and little fact checking is in incredibly poor taste.

Sincerely,

Jamie Spears ’08
