The number of people in the world is just short of 7 billion.

This number is enormous, and is growing every day worldwide.  With such a big number, one needs to localize the idea to fully grasp it. For example, Microsoft was considering buying Skype for 7 billion dollars.

Regardless, we shouldn’t focus primarily on the scale of our human population, but rather on the fact this size is unsustainable for the human race and the Earth to coexist.

Each on of these 7 billion people needs water, food and many other kinds of materials needed to build a home. This does not include those that consume excessively, as many people in America and other developed countries do. The majority of products that we buy and consume in our lives are made from or derived from petroleum, some of which include fertilizers, soap, footballs, eyeglasses… pretty much almost all plastics. And the list goes on.

We have a major global crisis on our hands. With the global population growing in addition to the imminent threat of global warming, other issues should be set aside for now because we are in a seemingly silent and stealthy crisis.

Just look outside! Other than a slightly chilly closing week, this last month of October has been an unseasonably hot month in weather history according to a science contributor for Fox News, a conservative news station known for ignoring the issue. Saturday’s weather is a reflection of the extreme temperature changes that occur because of the complex meteorological system; this same system causes some regions of the world to experience severe draughts and other normally hot regions to experience blizzards and frequent hurricanes.

The reason we are experiencing global warming and a violently fluctuating climate is that corporations are releasing man-made fossil fuels and destroying natural landscapes, the former of which always contains potent greenhouse gases and the latter usually contain equally potent greenhouse gasses.  These gases, primarily comprised of carbon dioxide, trap heat in Earth’s atmosphere and warm the Earth unnaturally.

So what can you do? Attempt to live and consume more sustainably. Join your local grassroots global warming prevention group to learn more.

Overpopulation is the one of the key issues in preventing not only a Earthly meltdown, but a worldwide famine and human extinction by starvation.  These sound as if they are extreme words, but as a result of our overconsumption of energy sources that emit fossil fuels – every time we when we turn on a light switch, for example – and the process of our unsustainable depletion of other valuable natural resources such as minerals, and fresh drinking water, we are turning to short-term measures such as off-shore oil drilling in order to stimulate the economy.

Imagine one day you awaken to find there is suddenly no more drinking water because all global freshwater is completely contaminated.

In short, there are many ways to approach the problem. For now, the least we can do is hope for weather that constitutes no other word but normal.
