Volleyball – Road weary: Alija Pittenger’s career as the Stags head coach has gotten off to a slow start. The team is 2-4 on what is a tough road trip, competing in tournaments

throughout the Northeast. The Stags finished 1-1 at the season-opening Hofstra Invitational, defeating Hofstra but losing to Seton Hall. At the Temple Invitational, the Stags went 1-3, defeating only Bowling Green.

Sophomore Alex Lopez leads the team with 55 kills, while fellow classmate Lauren Hughes has 47 on the year.’ ‘ ‘

Field Hockey – Off to a slow start: The Stags are 1-3 through their first four games of the year, with a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Aug. 30. They have also lost to Virginia Commonwealth, St. Joseph’s and Villanova.

Freshman Marit Westenberg, a Netherlands native, leads the team with two goals. Sophomore Jennifer Utz has one shutout on the year in goal, coming against Holy Cross. In that game senior Amy Hosking set up sophomore Anne Nieuwenhuis for the game-winning goal.

Cross Country – On your mark, get set: The cross country teams got their season underway with solid finishes at the Fordham Fiasco in the Bronx on Sept. 6. The men’s squad finished 11th out of 16 teams, while the women placed 12th out of 20 teams.

Sophomore Ben Heslin was the top finisher on the men’s side, finishing 30th with a time of 28:06.35. Freshman Vin Ferrer placed 47th.

Six freshman led the women’s team, with Lauren Tehan crossing the line in 57th place as the top finisher on the Stags.

Male Stag-lete of the Week –

ATHLETE: Tom Clements ’09
SPORT: Soccer
ACHIEVEMENT: Tom Clements started out his senior year by playing his usual solid defense in the Stags first three games. On top of that, Clements scored Fairfield’s lone goal against Northeastern, tying the game early in the second half. The Suffolk, England native has started nearly every game of his career. Prior to the season, Clements was named to the All-MAAC Preseason team.

Female Stag-lete of the Week-

ATHLETE: Kelly Boudreau ’12
SPORT: Soccer
ACHIEVEMENT: Starting at goalkeeper as a freshman, Farmington, Conn. native Kelly Boudreau was faced with the difficult task of replacing one of the programs all-time greats, Brett Maron. In the season’s first four games, Boudreau recorded three wins and allowed just three goals, with two shutouts. She was named the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week for her effort.
