Thirteen years ago, Philip Eliasoph, director of the art history program at Fairfield, was driving back from a New York City YMCA around midnight when the concept of the Open VISIONS Forum hit him. The 92nd Street Y is a renowned community and cultural center in Manhattan that schedules debates, discussions and lectures to encourage an exchange of ideas about art, culture and political opinion.

Students attended a candlelight vigil on Sunday to remember sophomore Kristen Duhamel, who died in a car accident on the Merritt Parkway on Sept. 22. The vigil took place following 9:30 mass at the Egan Chapel; students held lit candles and processed from the chapel to the Quad, where Duhamel lived.

Grass topped roofs. Energy efficient appliances. Suite-style rooms. These are just some of the features nearly 400 incoming freshmen have access to at their new five-story eco-friendly residence hall at Loyola College in Maryland. The 10,000 square foot building consists of reclaimed or locally produced materials, including steel beams made from 90 percent scrap metal and bricks from a factory 35 miles away in Pennsylvania.

An anonymous donor recently provided the DiMenna Nyselius library with a $26,500 technological upgrade. The project was funded by the University's capital equipment funds, and from an anonymous local resident in appreciation of the library's community access and services.

A short crime beat this year, as Fairfield Students settle back into campus life.

Fairfield English professor Nicholas Rinaldi will be honored as the Fairfield Arts Council's 29th Artist of the Year for his widely acclaimed novel "Between Two Rivers." Rinaldi, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., earned his graduate degrees at Fordham University.

When colonists felt like they were being charged an unfair amount of money without representation in their governing body, a revolution occurred and a new country was formed. At Fairfield, a Stag-inspired uprising may soon be justified as the 4,008 undergraduates watch helplessly as tuition rates continue to rise.

Cross country performs well at Leeber Invitational: The Fairfield cross country teams race only once on campus and had a successful outing in that one race, the Victor Leeber S.J. Invitational on Saturday. The men's team finished fifth, while the women's team placed sixth out of seven teams.

It was a tale of two teams for men's soccer this past week. Against Hartwick on Wednesday night, the Stags showed the tough defense that has been the staple of the team all year in a 0-0 tie at Lessing Field. But against No. 11 Harvard on Saturday in Cambridge, the Stags slipped up and allowed five goals in a 5-0 loss.
