CHANGE NAME TO WHOEVER WROTE THIS

If you were to go to YouTube and search the phrase “Slam Crunk,” you’d probably expect to find an unknown, ridiculous song by Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz, repeatedly yelling “What?!” and “Yeah!” at you for three minutes. Luckily, the actual results would lead you to the absolute musical contrariety to Lil Jon. Enter Holiday Parade.

Why You Should Listen:
Starting a couple years ago, pop-punk bands began to come out with rap covers, most notably Framing Hanley’s, “Lollipop,” and The Maine’s, “I Wanna Love You.”  Holiday Parade followed the trend in 2008, when they released “Slam Crunk” on their Purevolume page. If you want to know what makes their song unique in comparison to their contemporaries: it covers three hip-hop songs in one track. “Slam Crunk” takes the lyrics from Akon’s “Sweetest Girl,” Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby Got Back,” And Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat,” and mashes them all into one phenomenal punk-rock song. You might get a few laughs out of it as well, considering it’s basically a white guy with blonde hair saying stuff like “Dolla dolla bill, yall,” and “Super-soak that ho.” Nevertheless, it’s relentlessly catchy and if you like it the first time, you’ll like it the hundredth time you listen it.
“Slam Crunk” wasn’t the first song I heard from Holiday Parade. I first came across them when a friend told me about their most popular song “Getaway.”  Needless to say, not everyone is into the type of music Holiday Parade puts out there: something I define as a slightly more upbeat Dashboard Confessional. If you enjoy “Getaway,” then don’t just settle for a song or two by these guys in your iTunes Library. They came out with a full-length album in 2009 called Tickets and Passports, and are releasing a new EP on March 30th. Also, their Facebook page announced that they were touring the country right around the time of its release. Last week their MySpace revealed they were coming to NYC on the first of April, but the venue was to be announced and all their tour dates have since been taken down. I’m guessing they’re getting all the specifics worked out before they officially release the dates; so if you’re interested, stay tuned.

Slight Problem

“Slam Crunk” is the only song by Holiday Parade that isn’t on iTunes, and since their upcoming EP is entitled Tickets and Passports (acoustic sessions)1, it looks like it won’t be getting a spot on there either.

The Good News

If you search “Slam Crunk” on PureVolume, you can get it for free, along with “Getaway,” and a couple other tracks.
