The Fairfield men’s basketball team (23-10), led by nine three-pointers from senior Mike Evanovich overcame a 27-point deficit with under 16 to play to defeat George Mason in overtime, 101-96. Evanovich finished with a career-high 32 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Fellow senior Anthony Johnson scored nine points in the overtime, finishing with 25.

Evanovich hit the game-tying three with 0.9 seconds left. Fairfield had trailed seven with 29 seconds to go.

The win is the first in the post-season for Fairfield since the Stags defeated Virginia Tech in the NIT in 1973. It was the first time Fairfield scored 100 points in the game since 2005-06 against St. Peter’s.

Evanovich’s nine threes breaks the record he shared with Jermaine Clark for most in a game.

Fairfield trailed at the half 49-30 and outscored the Patriots 57-38 in the second half and 14-9 in the overtime period. Derek Needham scored 21 points. George Mason was led by 28 points by Andre Cornelius and 25 points by Mike Morrison.

The Stags will play the winner of Appalachian State and Harvard, who play tomorrow night. The game date and time is yet to be announced.
