The Irish Society, a new club on campus, will present the Irish expatriates band Black 47 at the Levee Thursday night.

Co-sponsoring the event with IRHG and UNITE, this is likely to be the largest event in the young club’s life.

“We have held one meeting, which included a performance by Carmac [a traditional Irish song band] and we had about 70 people show up. Since then, our club has grown to well over 100 members,” said Sean Klock ’04, the president of the society.

Black 47 had a successful concert at Fairfield University already.

“I have seen Black 47 twice. Once when they played here at the Quick Center a couple years ago,” Klock said.

Klock said he was excited about the upcoming performance.

“They are a great band, with original songs, and play a great set. It’s that simple.”

Money for the society and the events they intend to sponsor comes from fundraisers.

“The Irish Society is financed through its own fundraisers and with the help of Dr. James Mullan and the Irish Studies Department,” Klock said.

With funding from other on campus organizations, IRHG and UNITE, the event on Thursday will be free to those who attend with food and drink specials, according to Klock.

The society has plans for more performances and “Dr. Mullan has discussed bringing in a genealogist who specializes in Irish names,” said Klock. “This way people who have wondered where their Irish ancestors came from can come find out.”

This will be the first full semester that the club has been an active organization on Fairfield.

“[The club was founded] in order that people can enjoy and take pride in their Irish heritage.” said Klock.
