In “Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day,” Frances McDormand stars as Guinevere Pettigrew, a middle-aged London governess who finds herself without a job, food or money until she meets Delysia LaFosse (Amy Adams), an upwardly mobile American actress.

For a single day, Miss Pettigrew is suddenly thrust into Delysia’s glamorous and dizzying world. Delysia needs a social secretary to keep her commitments straight and to run interference between her various boyfriends.

There’s also Nick (Mark Strong), the rich owner of the flat where she stays; Phil (Tom Payne), a young producer who can get her the lead role for his upcoming musical production; and Michael (Lee Pace), a pianist who desperately wants to marry her.

It is clear Delysia’s heart lies with Michael, but the temptation of money and fame offered from the other suitors distract her from making a commitment.

The casting could not have been better for this film. The lead characters are lovable and worth rooting for.

Adams is the greatest asset to the film. She has great acting range in both comedic and dramatic roles and also flaunts a nice singing voice, which are all necessary to truly enhance her character.

The chemistry between the two protagonists is magnificent as Delysia offers Miss Pettigrew a glimpse into a world of which she has never been a part. In turn, Miss Pettigrew helps Delysia decide what she really wants out of life.

Miss Pettigrew’s straitlaced attitude contrasts perfectly with Delysia’s giddy energy.

Director Bharat Nalluri brilliantly captures the scenery and style of pre-WWII London. However, the plot is mediocre at best and is very predictable.

The story starts off slow in the beginning, but soon moves at a breath-taking pace, led by snappy dialogue and humorous interactions between the characters.

Unfortunately, “Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day” is currently only being shown in select theaters. However, you can catch it at Fairfield Cinemas at 40 Blackrock Turnpike in Fairfield.

“Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day” is an old-fashioned type movie with a story you can follow and a guaranteed happy ending.

Anyone who is in the mood for a classy and light romantic comedy will find themselves entertained by this fun-loving film.
