Kegs. Waterslides. Drenched public safety officers.

These are all elements of Spam Jam, one of the most-anticipated university activities of the spring semester, scheduled for this Saturday.

The school-sanctioned event, run by the Resident Apartment Student Organization (RASOR) and the University Townhouse Experience (UNITE), will occur near the 8, 9 and 10 blocks from noon until 4:30 p.m.

Melissa Ringer, publicist for RASOR-UNITE, is excited about this year’s festivities, the fifth year of the celebration.

“We have a lot of great new stuff this year,” said Ringer. “The dunk tank is the thing everyone’s getting excited about. We’re going to have public safety officers dunked.”

Public safety officers aren’t the only ones getting drenched on Saturday. There will be a waterslide on hand for the enjoyment of all the students.

Several campus bands will be performing as well. JonnieProud, Essex, Mickey Cooper, El Sugar and White Noise are set to perform.

A truck stocked with 25 kegs will be pulled into the party area to provide alcoholic beverages.

However, only juniors and seniors will be allowed in the area, and only students who can prove legal age with two forms of ID will be permitted to drink.

In order to avoid the long line to get a drinking bracelet, organizers advise that students pick up a bracelet ahead of time (today or tomorrow) at the Dept. of Res Life office in Gonzaga Hall.

In order to raise money for the event organizers have been selling cups in exchange for donations.

The university will not contribute any money to pay for alcohol, so they are taking donations from students to defray the cost.

Spam Jam started in 2000, when tensions between permanent beach residents and student residents came to a head.

In order to calm the situation and prevent large numbers of students congregating at the beach during Clam Jam, the university decided to create events and activities on campus.
