Steve Liguori ’09 is running for FUSA president with his experience and leadership qualities as his selling points.

The Liguori family is no stranger to Fairfield: His father, uncle, cousin and sister have or are attending the University.

While Liguori was accepted to Vermont, Providence, Sacred Heart and West Point, he ultimately chose Fairfield.

“I was so highly impressed with the community aspect of the school,” said Liguori. “The way the student body interacts and basically has fun with each other. It’s like a big family here and I really liked that.”

While at Fairfield, Liguori has been active on campus.

He has served as a 2009 class senator for three years while co-chairing the academics committee last year and serving on the student life committee this year. He also was one of the founding committee members of the Student Diversity Grant program.

Beyond the confines of the classroom walls, Liguori has also found time to graduate from the LEAD program and intern at the fourth U.S. Congressional district in Connecticut.

Through all of these activities, Liguori is well versed in Fairfield’s problems.

“The biggest problem in my eyes is student representation,” said Liguori. “The administration does what they want regardless of how we feel. It’s all about money to them and ‘marketing’ to them.

Rather than work with us and try to bring the beach into the community they push it away even more, Mark Reed said it himself at a senate meeting,” said Liguori.

In addition to his lengthy list of student activities, Liguori is also a member of ROTC.

“Serving your country is something I think everyone should do,” he said. “We owe a lot to this country, even if right now the government isn’t doing a great job. We still have a lot more freedom than most due and a lot of men have sacrificed their lives for it.”

However, Liguori emphasized that he is a student first and that the Army does not interfere with school or extracurricular activities.

Liguori also says as a junior MSOfficehe has experienced Fairfield as a different school and he also understands what the issues facing Fairfield students are.

“I have been at this school for three years now, I have seen a lot of change, and met a lot of people, some who knew Fairfield when it was a very different place,” he said.

Liguori advocates programming for the entire student body at the beach as well as a shuttle connecting seniors to campus.

“This is our four-year experience and we should be in control of it,” Liguori added.

“I am also the only candidate to have served in a pre-Hutch FUSA,” he said. “I am willing to stand up to the administration and fight for the students. I think they need someone who truly represents them and forces the administration to acknowledge and accept what the students want. Because after all, it is about us, not them.”
