The Stag Bus, complete with shocking red exterior, bright white lettering emblazoned on the side, and luxuriously -carpeted interior seating (well, not quite) is Fairfield University’s take on student transportation. You can’t miss it if you are within 50 feet of the Barone Campus Center, where it pulls in every hour on the hour.

So have you experienced the pleasure of riding the Stag Bus? If not, you are missing out on the happenings of Fairfield. open up a whole new world off campus, especially if you’re a freshman without a car.

There are places to run errands, visit cool eateries and more, all within walking distance of the Stag Bus town shuttle stops.

If you’re looking for somewhere to run errands:

You should get off at the CVS shopping center, which is the bus’s second stop. CVS has everything you could need, whether it be Easy Mac, school supplies, prescriptions or giant bags of candy.

Bonus: There is an Office Max and a Marshall’s on either side of CVS, making it easy for you to get all of your shopping done in just one spot.

If the food aisle of CVS just isn’t cuttin’ it:

Try Super Stop ‘ Shop, which is the bus’ third stop. Check out the organic section, and venture into the world of all natural ingredients. Load up on Kashi cereals and soy products. For the world traveler, try the aisle stocked with foods from different cultures, which includes everything from Asian to Mexican to Jewish. Gefilte fish, anyone?

On weekends: Try Trader Joe’s, located in the Black Rock shopping center. The store carries tons of cool foods; I recommend the flavored-granolas, cocoa almonds, Pirate’s Booty (flavored corn puffs) and spinach-artichoke dip.

Bonus: There is a Pier One in the same plaza, where you can find decorations for your house or dorm. Blue Tulip, a unique gift store, is also located there. It’s stocked full of cards, handmade paper and unique gifts from around the world for any occasion.

For those of you who just can’t wait indulge in some retail therapy:

Get off at the first shuttle stop near the town library. From there, the walk to one of Fairfield’s main shopping streets is short, and there is a lot to do nearby. Take your pick from Borders, Banana Republic, Victoria’s Secret or one of the smaller boutiques that line the street.

Front Page and Cargo Bay are both located there, which boast an eclectic mix of accessories and the latest in fashions from designers such as PA Company and Free People. You may even want to check out Where in the World?, a map store with tons of travel books and other worldly items.

Bonus: Groovy’s (formerly Chef’s Table) is just a little way down Post Road. It is a jazzy eatery that sells sandwiches and soup, and has both burrito and salad bars, which you can even enjoy while listening to local bands. There is also Firehouse Deli just around the corner on Reef Road. While you are there rent a video from Media Wave, a video store on Post Road that has a great selection and even some hard-to-find items.

This is the stop for you if you want to blow a little (or a lot) of cash.

With the rise in gas prices, the Stag Bus is also a great option for those students who have been driving around for the past week on empty tanks. So get out there, but be ready to spend some time out there, because the Stag Bus won’t be back for another hour.
