After a 10-year absence, most band or groups are considered irrelevant in the eyes of the public- but not the Spice Girls. They are just as big as ever, and their performance at Madison Square Garden Monday night proved that they were just as hip and relevant as they were in the ’90s.

It takes a larger than life act with massive energy to truly rock the Garden. The Spice Girls did exactly that in their flawless performance.

Dozens of T-shirts lined the walls with their faces, nicknames and song titles. Thousands of fans were screaming their names and singing their songs.

It was as if they had never left the music scene.

With an explosion of smoke and purple and pink lights, the “girls” – most of them mothers now – emerged in gold glittered costumes singing “Spice Up Your Life” just as if it were 1997 again.

While they did not dance as much as they used to, they had plenty of white clad backup dancers to make up for it. Their energy, voices and friendly banter were not any different, which is one of the elements what made the show so enjoyable.

The Girls sang all of their hits and made half a dozen costume changes in the two hour show, including wrestling robes and Ginger’s famous union jack dress. They also did a medley of high-energy, party favorites like “Celebration and “We are Family.”

The highlight of the show was each of the girls’ solo performances.

The robotic Victoria “Posh” Beckham worked the runway with a long black train. Melanie B “Scary” cracked the whip in her characteristic leopard body suit. “Baby” Emma crooned “Maybe” from her album in a sparkling black and white mod dress.

“Sporty” Melanie C sang her solo hit “I Turn to You,” proving that she has the most powerful voice of the fabulous five.

But it was Geri “Ginger’s” rendition of “It’s Raining Men” from her solo effort that outshined the rest. Her spicy performance almost makes you forgive her for leaving the group in 1998.

The Spice Girls showcased their girlish charm and young energy, but also proved that they had come of age when they brought their children on stage to sing their hit “Momma.” Cruz Beckham stole the show from when he started to break dance on the stage.

“He’s the next Justin Timberlake,” proud momma Victoria proclaimed.

The Spice Girls proved that they will be loved for generations to come, no matter how old they are. Just make sure to catch them now, since they cancelled dates in South America, Australia, South Africa, and Asia from their world tour, and this may be the only reunion tour for you to see them.

As the screens said once the group left the stage, “Mission accomplished!”
