Sun, surf and sand. Spring break is right around the corner and Fairfield students are looking forward to a break from tests and homework.

However, the start of spring leaves everyone with the end of winter blues – nails in desperate need of a manicure and the few extra pounds we’re still carrying around from the holidays.

If you will be heading to the beach and worried about looking the part, here are some tips to getting fit for spring break.

1. Exercise, exercise, exercise: First and foremost, getting active is the most important way to get into shape, especially for the start of bathing suit season. According to nutritionists and doctors, an hour a day devoted to exercise, combined with healthful eating habits, is the way to a healthy and fit body.

2. Leave junk food in the winter: Of course it’s OK to cheat by treating yourself to that juicy burger or bowl of ice cream. However, maintaining a healthy body and a well-balanced diet is the only way to go about it. Fruits, veggies and protein should remain at the top of your diet.

3. Curb the alcohol: Let’s face it – no one looks attractive with a beer belly, especially in that new bathing suit. Instead of having that third glass of whatever drink you love, why not trade it in for some water? We all know you will drink plenty when you are on break anyway.

4. Stay positive: When your outlook on life is a positive one and you walk around with a smile on your face, everything else seems to fall into place. Remain upbeat and happy, and you can be assured that your spring break will be a blast.

Somehow, we all made it to college and should know how to stay fit and healthy, especially for the start of summer.

Not only will these suggestions help you get into shape for the upcoming break, but you may also establish a routine to make sure you maintain your fitness and health in the long term.
