Fr. Jeffery P. von Arx, S.J: University President

Bio: Fr. von Arx started his academic career in 1982 at Georgetown University as a faculty member in the history department, where he served as chair from 1991 to 1997. At Fordham, von Arx had direct responsibility for the operation of the college at Rose Hill, which is the original undergraduate division of Fordham University. He has served or is currently on the boards of trustees of Boston College, Canisius College, Loyola Marymoun University and Xaiver University. In 2002, von Arx joined Fordham’s  board. In 2004, von Arx succeeded Rev. Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J., to become Fairfield University’s eighth president.

Fr. Charles Allen, S.J.: Executive Assistant

Bio: Fr. Allen joined the Jesuits at the age of 17. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in philosophy from Boston College and an M.A.T. from Brown University. He also earned his S.T.B. in theology from Gregorian University in Rome and an M.Ed. from Columbia. A former headmaster at Fairfield Prep, he has served as the assistant to the president since 1994. He plays an important role in the activities of the President’s office and also serves as the secretary of the Board of Trustees and secretary of the Fairfield University Corporation.

 

Karen Donoghue: Assistant Dean of Students & Director of Residence Life

Bio: Karen Donoghue graduated from Fairfield University in 2003 and received her Master’s in Higher Education from Rider University. Donoghue made history as a Stag when she was elected as the first female FUSA president in 2002. Now Donoghue works for Res Life, where she oversees the developmental programs for all on-campus housing and provides training for residence life staff members. She also assists in the supervision and administration of all student living areas.

Wylie Smith Blake: Community Outreach Coordinator and Campus Minister

Bio: As a campus minister and community outreach coordinator, Wylie handles the local service opportunities for students on campus. During the year, Wylie selects candidates for the  Spring Break service trips in addition to running and appointing student leaders to the Community Service Club. In the Spring, Wylie helps run the largest day of service on campus which is known as Hunger Clean up. A local herself, Wylie is very familiar with the service programs in the area and is a helpful connection for students who wish to explore these opportunities as well as their future service ambitions.

Thomas Pellegrino: Associate Vice President & Dean of Students

Bio: Prior to entering the field of higher education, Pellegrino practiced law. An alumnus of Fairfield, where he was a FUSA president, he graduated in 1990 then went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Syracuse in 1993. He practiced law for almost 10 years before beginning his career at Fairfield. He was a litigation attorney who focused on education and hazing law. His role as Dean includes such duties as being an advocacy for students issues, concerns and initiatives, particularly as they relate to life outside the immediate classroom. Pellegrino also supervises many offices that relate to student life.

Jim Fitzpatrick: Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs

Bio: As Assistant Vice President of Administration and Student Affairs, this 1970 graduate from Fairfield is also the “voice of the stags” at basketball games, providing announcements for nearly 40 years. He is also known for his commitment to service and won the Alumni Service Award in 1974.

Debnam Chappell: Dean of Freshmen

Bio: As the Dean of Exploratory Academic Advising, Debnam Chappell helps freshmen who are exploring majors or are undecided. Besides helping students with their majors, Dean Chappell offers assistance for academic success in the form of test-taking strategies and time management. Her office collaborates with the Student Affairs Division, June Orientation and Career Planning.

Meredith Marquez: Associate Director of Student Diversity Programs

Bio: Meredith Marquez graduated from Syracuse University with a B.S. in Public Relations in 2005 and then went to the University of Georgia and received her  M.Ed. in College Student Affairs Administration. As the Associate Director of the Office of Student Diversity Programs, Marquez coordinates the Academic Immersion, Safe Space, and the Magis Scholar Programs. Marquez is responsible for implementing the Cura Personalis mentoring program at Fairfield University and also plans events, provides supplemental academic advising to students, and advises the groups S.A.L.S.A., Performing for Change, and Remixx.
