To the Editor:

If landlords are willing to deny the right to private property for their tenants in the interest of public safety, then they ought to impose the same restriction to their rights during the summer.

If First Selectman Kenneth Flatto believes the police should have access to this private property whenever wrongdoing is suspected, then that should hold in the summer.

If police officers conduct patrols on private property while school is in session, they also should conduct similar patrols no matter the month. Perhaps they do not need to conduct as many patrols in the summer – as there might be less noise complaints. However, there must be patrols on Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day – at the very least – strictly in the interest of public safety.

I am certain that the landlords and Flatto will have no problem with these proposed patrols. After all, safety is first and property rights are second at Fairfield.

Sincerely,

Chris Zeitz ’04
