What’s with that big deer head on the wall in the Campus Center? It seems out of place with all the other stuff that’s in there. Why do we have that in the first place?

—A head for decoration

Ah, you’re talking about Lucas the Stag looking down at everyone on the first floor of Barone.

The Stag, being Fairfield university’s mascot, obviously is a source of pride for many on campus. Before the Campus Center was renovated, there was the Stag-Her Inn, a very woodsy atmosphere that had as one of its wall decorations a stag head. When the new Campus Center was opened up, a new stag head was hung, donated by someone who just happened to have it in his attic (how it got there, and who would keep a massive head of any sort in their attic, I don’t know).

The stag head’s name is a whole other story. But in the end, I think students are probably glad that we don’t have as a mascot something like a praying mantis or skunk, especially when so many of both of them can be found roaming the campus. Time to stock up on tomato juice!

There are Coke vending machines everywhere, but yet we have the PepsiCo Theatre. Shouldn’t it be the CocaCo Theatre?

—Sugar high but observant

I’m tempted to have a nice product placement here for Nestea, but I’m going to hold back and be Cool… (the delicious taste… the raspberry flavor if I want it… mmm…)

The best I can figure based on the handbook and faculty histories, I found that what was the Playhouse was renovated around ten years ago and became PepsiCo. When soda companies come on campus, they usually offer with it some sort of community enhancement. At my high school, the Pepsi-sponsored and paid for scoreboards were replaced by Coke ones of fairly equal caliber when they came onto campus. It probably stands to reason that PepsiCo is named so as a direct result of a corporate sponsorship for renovation so that Theatre Fairfield can make fun of those giant nametags each and every orientation.

Considering how vague even the Student Handbook is, when they can write for pages about who a building was named after, I think everyone was on a sugar rush when it happened. Perhaps we’ll never know what happened at that point in our history… (preparing for the letters that will let me write the follow-up… HINT HINT)

Studying at the BCC can be difficult, especially when there are a few groups trying to do projects at the same time. Are the rooms on the second floor open to groups who want to study?

—Needing some quieter space

It’s bad enough you have a massive Stag head staring down at you (he made it into all three answers – I sense a theme here!), but then people keep yapping while you’re cracking the books? How rude!

The simple answer is not really. With the Board of Govenors (BOG – fun acronym) mainly trying to ensure that clubs have access to the rooms when they need them, it’s probably better to reserve a room in the Library, which has give or take two billion study rooms. Reserve a room in advance if you want to avoid the headache of trying to find one open though – business school students alone practically live in there, especially when a presentation is about 30 minutes away.

I’m sure that taking a few minutes to block a room off for yourself will be nice when you avoid a group of 20 people coming into the room, complaining that BOG said that the room was theirs to discuss an upcoming event. Instead, you can stay cool. (Mmm… Cool Nestea…)
