To the Editor:

In response to the letter submission in this past week’s Mirror by the College Democrats, I cannot help but be embarrassed as both a student of this university and a moderate “McCain” Republican. In linking, using no logical basis whatsoever, the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives’s Richard Boucher with the Bush administration’s war in Iraq, the College Democrats once again demonstrate the ultimate futility of engaging them in reasoned arguments. Mr. Boucher is a respected member of a community dedicated to utilizing charitable religious organizations for secular purposes, and it is this mission that Fairfield University’s Center for Faith and Public Life chooses to uphold. Merely because the Office of Faith-Based Initiatives falls under the aegis of the Bush administration does not mean that it can be tarred with the same brush as Operation Iraqi Freedom, nor can Mr. Boucher be blamed for policy decisions that are not his own any more than the Postmaster can be held accountable for a failure in Homeland Security. The College Democrats hyperventilate at the thought of having an official from the Bush administration here, while losing sight of the fact that the work that he does is decidedly non-partisan and integral to repairing the damage done by both the natural disasters at home and the continued fighting abroad. I applaud Fairfield for having such a prestigious guest present for the celebration of its newest honorable undertaking, especially one who has experience on such a grand scale parallel to the mission this new office will undoubtedly represent. Perhaps if the College Democrats spent less time pointing fingers and more time getting their constituents to the polls, they could change the policies they spend so much time bellyaching about.

Sincerely, Richard A. Fasano, Jr. ’06 Associate Justice Fairfield University Student Court
