On Sunday the women’s basketball team dismantled the Maine Black Bears in a 76-54 victory at Alumni Hall in front of only 650 people.

There were a few dedicated students scattered throughout the crowd but not enough. The super-bleachers on the far side of the building, which were packed with students for Tuesday’s men’s basketball game against Yale, were nearly empty.

Only the band, FUSA President Hutch Williams ’08, men’s basketball player Mamadou Diakhate ’08 and a few other students were in the cheering section.

The men’s basketball team is exciting and led by a personable coach but so is the women’s team. The men’s basketball team is 2-5, while the women’s team is 6-1 and in the top 30 in points allowed and shooting percentage in the nation.

But no one at Fairfield knows about it.

The University spent a lot of time and money promoting the Sacred Heart doubleheader, but it has forgotten about the rest of the season.

FUSA and the Athletic Department did almost nothing to promote the game against Maine on Sunday.

This coming Sunday at 1 p.m., the women return to Alumni Hall for one of the most important games of the season.

The Marist Red Foxes head to Fairfield after receiving votes in the Top 25 polls (they are 29th) and making the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament last year.

The Stags need the support of the University and its students to help them win.

When Alumni Hall is shaking with cheers, it is a definite advantage. Everyone saw that last year when fans filled the Arena for the men’s game against St. Francis; it helped the Stags win.

Now, is time for the school to rally around an extremely talented women’s basketball team and come out to support them.

People may perceive women’s basketball as less exciting than men’s basketball, but the great shooting, tough defense and athletic ability of the women’s team is just as compelling.

They may not dunk, but seeing Sabra Wrice ’08 steal the ball out of nowhere and rush down the court for a layup is just as exciting.

Come out and support your fellow students on Sunday at Alumni Hall at 1 p.m. It will be worth your time.
