The women’s lacrosse team was criticized earlier this season for having four coaches in four years, an unstable program and not enough players – boy, have the Stags proved their critics wrong.

At first, this wouldn’t seem like a true statement. Despite their opening game victory, the Stags followed up with a six-game losing streak. But a closer look at those games is needed, and the major factor will jump out at you. Not one of those match-ups was with a MAAC opponent.

Undeterred, the women persevered to start up another streak – this time a five-game winning streak, including defeating of four MAAC opponents. One of those teams included the No. 1 ranked team in the conference, the LeMoyne Dolphins. The Stags jumped from their preseason No. 3 ranking into the number one spot.

“Something just clicked between the whole team,” said attacker Courtney Hurley, ’06, in reference to their first conference game against Niagara. “As a freshman, it was the first time I felt a real unity with the upperclassmen.

The freshmen have stepped up big for the Stags this season. Leading the 2006 class is midfielder, Beth Loffredo. With 42 points in 13 games, she earned two straight MAAC Rookie of the Week titles.

Here’s where the Lady Stags really show their depth; following Loffredo in goals is junior Jessica Conahan (40), sophomore Megan Ryan (28) and senior Megan Main (22). Working well as a unit, the whole attack is a known threat to opponents out on the field.

On the defensive end, representing the talent of the sophomores are Margot Krah and Monica Janowitz. Shining along side junior Colleen Sindel and sophomore Kristen Arcieri,

“(Krah) brings a great spirit to the team,” said Colleen Sands, ’06. Janowitz can be found at the core of the Stag’s defense with great saves during the game to keep the team alive. Like Krah , she is also known for her positive attitude.
