Once again the Irish society, and a coalition of the willing, will present an Irish-themed rock group at the Levee on Thursday, April 1.

The Highland Rovers, a band hailing from Fairfield county, will perform their own brand of Irish infused rock ‘n’ roll at the Levee Thursday night.

Free food and drink specials will be available.

The last time the Irish society presented a concert at the Levee, featuring Black 47, the venue was packed.

Few other events in recent memory have brought as many people to the on-campus bar.

Sean Klock, president of the society, expects another good concert and more big crowds at the on-campus bar.

“The Highland Rovers play a great set and they play to the crowd,” said Klock.

In addition to the Irish society’s budget, funds from UNITE and The Mirror will pay for the event.

The Mirror is excited to help them out with sponsoring this event because they’re an organization that is really pro-active and puts on events students get excited about,” said Ethan L. Fry, editor in chief of The Mirror.

The Rovers are working on their third album, and perform frequently in the area. Mirror editors recently saw the band perform at Ray Kelly’s in Bridgeport and decided the band was worth the investment.

“The Irish society really did a great job with the Black 47 concert,” said Fry, “and the Highland Rovers are also a terrific band.”

Black 47 performed under the banner of the Irish society in mid-February.

Matt Dinnan, assistant dean of students, estimated the crowd for Black 47 reached about 700, according to Klock.

“We had a full house and for an hour-and-a-half had a line of anywhere between 20 to 70 people,” Klock said about that concert.

This is the first full semester the Irish society has been in existence.

“I really hope student organizations like the Irish society continue to put on events like they have this year,” said Fry.

“It’s really encouraging to see student groups like this get started, hopefully the trend will continue,” he said.
